The Second UMN-CAS Bilateral Seminar
“PM2.5 Science, Health Effects, and Control Technology”

The second Bilateral Seminar between the University of Minnesota (UMN) and the Chinese Academy of Science (CAS) was held at 3M Innovation Center from October 6 to October 9, 2015. The theme for the seminar was “PM2.5 Science, Health Effects, and Control Technology”. This year’s session introduced corporative plans on project applications, and discussed particulate matter monitoring, control engineering, transmission, and conversion mechanism.

Chinese environment officials and 35 Chinese delegates from the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) attended this seminar, in addition to 25 UMN faculty members and 65 delegates from the Center for Filtration Research (CFR). CFR consists of 17 leading international filtration companies, six of which are based in Minnesota: 3M, Donaldson Company, H.B. Fuller, Entegris, TSI Inc., and MSP Corporation. Together, CFR companies manufactured $22 billion filtration products, representing a third of the world supplies. Seminar participants visited 3M, Donaldson Company and MSP Corporation.

At the conference, CAS president Chunli Bai sent a congratulatory letter and encouraged participants to make an effort using the PM2.5 air pollution control in China. 3M’s Executive CEO of Research and Development, Dr. John Banovetz, briefly reviewed the company’s culture of innovative technology application. Lastly, Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton spoke to Chinese delegates about the 30 year history between Minnesota and Shaanxi, the state’s sister province.

The first UMN-CAS Bilateral Seminar was held last year in Xi’an, China, on May 27 and 28, 2014. UMN President Eric Kaler and College of Science and Engineering Dean Steven Crouch led a group of 15 UMN faculties from the College of Science and Engineering, Medical School, and School of Public Health to discuss PM2.5 Pollution in China, and filtration solutions. The UMN Particle Technology Laboratory is known as a leader in air pollution control, having helped the United States Environmental Protection Agency to establish the original PM2.5 standard.

The third UMN-CAS Bilateral Seminar will be hosted in China in summer 2016.

第二届UMN-CAS双边论坛及第48届过滤研究中心会议成功闭幕

2015年10月6日至9日,第二届明尼苏达大学-中国科学院双边论坛在美国明尼苏达州双城地区3M公司创新中心成功举办。本次论坛主题为“PM2.5 Science, Health Effects, and Control Technology”, 瞄准大气颗粒物监测与控制技术、传输与转化机制、颗粒物健康效应及源解析等热点和关键问题进行了交流,探索和开发适合我国的颗粒物污染控制技术。参与论坛约120余人,包括中国科学院科学家代表,国内知名大学教授和环境相关政府官员35人、明尼苏达大学机械、工程、卫生、护理等学院约30余名教授,3M公司、唐纳森公司、巴斯夫(BASF)公司、TSI和波音公司等国际著名企业代表约60余人。陕西省环保产业集团、盐城环保科技城等派代表参加考察学习。明尼苏达大学过滤研究中心包括17家领先国际企业, 其中六家(3M、唐纳森公司、富乐公司、英特格公司、提赛环科仪器公司和MSP Corp)总部设在明州。 这些公司每年过滤产品销售总额超过220亿美元,占全球过滤类产品总产值的1/3。与会人员对3M公司、唐纳森公司和MSP总部进行了参观考察。

白春礼院长发来贺信并鼓励国内外与会者为我国PM2.5污染控制做出努力。3M公司研发部执行总裁John Banovetz博士在开幕仪式上对参会者致以了热烈的欢迎,简要介绍了3M公司以便让大家充分了解3M的鼓励创新精神和创新技术应用的文化。论坛共同主席明尼苏达大学裴有康教授和中国科学院地球环境研究所曹军骥研究员对参会者表示了欢迎。

第一届UMN-CAS 双边论坛于2014年5月27-28日在中国陕西省西安中科院地球环境研究所举办。明尼苏达大学校长Eric Kaler博士及科学工程学院院长Steven Crouch带领15名来自明大科学与工程学院、医学院以及公共卫生学院的资深教授参与会议。上次论坛主要讨论了中国PM2.5污染现状并探讨可减轻污染的过滤方案 。 第二届论坛在美国明尼苏达州举办,提出更多关于具体项目计划有待实施。第三届UMN-CAS双边论坛计划将于2016年夏季在中国盐城举办。 明尼苏达大学大气颗粒技术实验室主任及大气污染与控制领域专家裴有康博士与EPA共同制定PM2.5标准。明尼苏达州Mark Dayton州长专程接见了中国代表团,他表示中国陕西省与明尼苏达州有三十余年历史的姐妹省份情谊,希望这个论坛可以继续为中美两国科研交流提供国际性的平台。
