Hsiao Shaw-Lundquist Fellowship

History

This fellowship was established in 2005 by Shaw-Lundquist Associates, Inc., as well as Jennie and Fred Hsiao who are recognized leaders in the Chinese American community in Minnesota. Fred Hsiao, who was born in Shaanxi province in China, left in 1945 to pursue an advanced degree in engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.  After earning a master of engineering, he enrolled in a PhD program at the University of Minnesota.  He left the University in 1949 to work fulltime for the Orville E. Madsen construction company, eventually becoming vice president and took the name of Fred Shaw for his business dealings.  Jennie Hsiao, an active and energetic leader and volunteer in the Twin Cities Chinese American community, was born in Hunan province in China.   On June 6, 1958, Fred and Jennie were married in Minneapolis.  In 1974, Fred Hsiao and Lyle Lundquist formed Shaw-Lundquist Associates, Inc, which by 2003 was recognized as the largest minority-owned construction business in the Midwest.  In 2004 Fred was inducted into the National Association of Minority Contractors Hall of Fame.  In 2005, Shaw-Lundquist Associates, Inc. was the first-ever recipient of the MEDA entrepreneurial Hall of Fame award.

Purpose

By establishing this endowed fund, donors Shaw-Lundquist Associates, Inc.,as well as Jennie and Fred Hsiao, wish to provide an opportunity for University of Minnesota graduate students to incorporate an educational experience in China as part of their academic studies (including approved internships or professional training). The scholarship award varies from $1,000 - $2,000, and shall be used for the payment of travel, tuition, or personal expenses.

How to Apply

Students should submit a completed application and the supporting materials to the China Center Office. Applications will be reviewed by a committee. Scholarship recipients will be notified of scholarship awards by email approximately three weeks after the application deadline. Materials must be received no later than 4:00 p.m. on the deadline date. For more information, contact the China Center.

萧氏研究生奖学金

萧氏研究生奖学金由Shaw-Lundquist Associates公司创始人Jennie and Fred Hsiao萧氏夫妇于2005年捐赠设立。萧氏夫妇是明尼苏达州华裔社区的领袖之一。萧锋先生出生于中国陕西省,1945年离开中国赴美国在麻省理工学院攻读工程硕士学位,后继续攻读美国明尼苏达大学的博士学位。1949年博士毕业后,萧先生供职于Orville E. Madsen建筑公司,被提拔为副总裁并使用英文名Fred Shaw。 他的夫人萧珍妮女士出生于中国湖南省,是明尼苏达双城地区旅美华裔社区里积极和充满活力的领导者和志愿者 。 1958年6月6日两人在明尼阿波利斯结婚。1974年萧先生和合伙人Lyle Lundquist成立了Shaw-Lundquist Associates, Inc. 公司。该公司于2003年被评为美国中西部地区规模最大的少数族裔持有的建筑施工企业。 2004年萧先生并评为全美少数族裔建筑承包商联合会的荣誉榜成员。 2005年Shaw-Lundquist Associates, Inc.公司获得美国商务部少数族裔企业发展局(MEDA)首次颁发的企业奖章。

宗旨

Shaw-Lundquist Associates, Inc. 公司及其创始人Jennie and Fred Hsiao夫妇希望通过设立此研究生奖学金,资助明尼苏达大学的研究生通过实习或专业培训的方式,把中国的学习经验融于美国的课程中。该助学金数额为1000美元-2000美元,可用于支付申请人的旅行费用、学费或个人开支。
