Marlee poses next to the Great Wall of China during her May term studying at Beijing Sport University
Marlee Hein is a sophomore studying journalism in the College of Liberal Arts and minoring in sports management and leadership. She received the Red Pocket Scholarship to spend May term 2015 at Beijing Sport University through the School of Kinesiology’s International Sport, Wellness and Recreation in China program.
Here is what she had to say about her experience:
As cliché as it sounds, traveling to China was a trip of a lifetime. I was able to immerse myself in an ancient culture with deep symbolism and oriental traditions while studying sports internationally; the entirety of my trip abroad was unforgettable and changed many of my preconceived perspectives. Our class was paired with three students from the Beijing Sport University while we studied on their campus. This allowed my classmates and me to truly comprehend their lifestyle, education and customs. Throughout my trip, I found myself continuously shocked by how easily we related with the students, and the many glimpses of U.S. culture within the Beijing city limits. Nonetheless, there were vast differences and new things that I learned each day.
