The game of Go, an abstract strategy board game invented in China more than 2,500 years ago, is known for its high complexity and intellectual merit. What is less known is Go’s cultural influence and ability to bring together people from different backgrounds. In this webinar, two professional Go players will introduce the game, touch on their own experiences growing up with Go in China and Canada, and discuss the role of Go both in the past and in modern society.

Stephanie Yin (殷明明) is the founder and president of New York Institute of Go (NYIG). Stephanie is a professional 1p Go player. She became professional at the age of 16 and has won multiple U.S. Go tournaments. Stephanie is an experienced Go teacher fluent in English and Chinese. Stephanie led NYIG's organization and supported several international and national Go events. She was a main commentator in the Google Deepmind team for the Ke Jie vs. AlphaGo matches in the Future of Go Summit. Stephanie served as the Vice President in the American Go Association in 2019, overseeing Go development in the U.S., U.S.-China relations, and collaboration with international organizations.

Ryan Li
Ryan Li

Ryan is a professional go player in the North American Go Federation. He is a Go teacher and influencer. Ryan is the only western affiliated professional who defeated a world champion and a two-time champion of the transatlantic professional go league. He received his Ph.D. in climate physics from Yale University and authored several publications in atmospheric sciences and climate change. Ryan is currently a machine learning engineer at Amazon.
