The novel Journey to the West was first published in 1592. But even before it was published, dramas and stories about a monk who left China and went to India to obtain scriptures circulated. And after the novel was published, dramatic renditions of the story continued. The latest version is "The Monkey King," to be premiered by the San Francisco Opera on November 14. In this talk, Professor Ann Waltner will give a brief outline of the novel and then talk about the transformation of the novel on the San Francisco Opera stage.
This program is part of China Center's "Considering China Webinar Series", exploring important topics related to China's many facets with the local community.
