Harbin Institute of Technology was founded in 1920 and was designated as one of six key national universities by the Chinese Ministry of Higher Education in 1954. Harbin Institute of Technology is also a research university and a member of the C9 League in China. The core of the university is in science, engineering, and research, but inter-disciplinary curriculum and studies are also being developed.

As a part of the curriculum development, the university sent groups to the University of Minnesota in 2014 and 2015 to attend two-week series of seminars and workshops provided in collaboration by the U of M China Center and the Center for Educational Innovation. The delegation's 21 participants attended a series of courses to strengthen both their pedagogical skills and their understanding of course curriculum and design. Participants also had chances to explore the University's St. Anthony Fall Laboratory to learn more about fluid engineering and research.
