Chen Shan-Ming, who was born in 1909 in Beijing, graduated in 1931 from Tsinghua University before becoming a teaching assistant at Tsinghua University, then at Beijing Normal University. Chen enrolled at the University of Minnesota in 1936 and received a master’s degree and a doctorate degree in plant pathology in 1940 and 1943, respectively. At the same time, he was a member of Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society. After graduation, Chen stayed at the University as a research fellow to conduct penicillin research.
In 1944, Chen returned to China where he worked as a researcher at the Central Experiment Institute and the Northern China Academy of Agriculture. In 1956, the Chinese Academy of Agriculture was established, and Chen worked there as a researcher and vice-director until 1987.
In 1987 a project on stripe rust of wheat, led by Chen, won the second prize of the 3rd National Natural Science Award. Chen has made great contributions to the development of research on wheat nematodiasis in China.

陈善铭,1909年生于北京,1931年毕业于清华大学,先后任清华大学和北京师范大学助教。1936年,来到明尼苏达大学,并分别于1940年和1943年获得植物病理学的硕士和博士学位,同时获得Sigma-Xi荣誉会员资格。毕业后,陈善铭留在明大从事青霉菌方面的研究,1944年,他放弃了在美国的工作机会回国效力。
回国后,陈善铭先后任职于中央农业实验所和华北农业科学研究所。1956年中国农业科学院组建后,他任研究员以及副所长直至1987年。
1987年,一项由陈善铭主持的有关小麦条锈病的项目获得了第三届国家自然科学二等奖,同时他的研究为我国植物线虫学的研究也做出了重要贡献。
