Du Yuanzai, who was born in Xupu, Hunan in 1893, obtained his bachelor degree in education from Beijing Normal University in 1924 and went back to Hunan to teach at Hunan Second Normal School. In 1925, he came to the U.S. and earned his master’s degree at the University of Minnesota and JD from Northwestern University. In 1928, Du returned to China and served as a professor and director of law section at Henan Zhongshan University. He served as the first dean of the Law School at Henan University in after its establishment in 1930.After leaving Henan University, Du served as a professor at Beijing Normal University, Beijing University, Hunan University, Sichuan Provincial Institute of Education, Nanjing Central University, National Southwest Associated University, and Northwestern University. In 1949, Professor Du and his family moved to Taiwan, where he served as the secretary of the classification committee at the Taiwan Examination Institute and as a minister at both the Ministry of Examination and the Ministry of Justice and Administration. In 1958, Du became the president of National Taiwan Normal University.
Du published many scholastic journals and monographs in newspapers and magazines, including China's Criminal Law Research, Dewey’s Philosophy of Education, Social Education, Tagore as an Educator, On the Vatican Papal Position in International Law, Confucianism and Modern thought , What China Youth should Endeavor Today,Fifty Years of Chinese Education, among others.

杜元载，1893年生于湖南省溆浦县，1924年他获得北京师范大学教育学士学后前往湖南第二师范学校任教。1925年，他赴美深造，获得明尼苏达大学教育学硕士学位和西北大学法学博士学位。1928年，杜元载回国任河南中山大学法科教授兼主任。1930年河南大学法学院成立，他成为该校历史上第一任法学院院长。后又在北京师范大学，北京大学，湖南大学， 四川省立教育学院，南京中央大学，国立西南联合大学，西北大学等任教授。1949年，杜教授举家前往台湾，又先后担任台湾考试院分类计划委员会秘书、考选部司长、司法行政部司长等职位。1958年，他出任国立台湾师范大学校长。
杜元载曾出版多部学术专著及报章杂志论著，包括《中国刑法研究》、《杜威教育哲学》、《社会教育》、《教育学家的泰戈尔》、《论梵蒂冈罗马教皇在国际法上之地位》、《儒家学说与现代思潮》、《今日中国青年努力方向》、《五十年来的中国教育》等等。
