Pan Chung-Hsiang, who was born in 1906, graduated from Beijing University in 1931. After working for Central Geological Survey Institute and Sichuan Geological Survey Institute for several years, Pan came to the U.S. in 1941 and studied at the University of Kansas and the University of Minnesota. He received a master’s degree in geology in 1944 and a doctoral degree in geology from the University of Minnesota in 1946.
After he returned to China, Pan was a professor at Sun Yat-Sen University, Bejing University, Beijing Geology University, and the graduate school (in Beijing) of Wuhan Geology University. He also served as the director of the Geology Survey Institute in Guangdong and Guangxi.
Pan was a co-founder and deputy executive director of the Chinese Petroleum Society. Pan published the article “Petroleum in basement rocks” published in the American Association of Petroleum Geologists Bulletin in 1982. He led the development of the publication “Geology of Oil and Gas Field in the World,” which was used as a textbook.

潘钟祥生于1906年,1931年毕业于北京大学地质系。随后他先后任职于中央地质调查所和四川地质调查所。1940年赴美留学堪萨斯大学和明尼苏达大学,并从明尼苏达大学分别于1944年获得地质学硕士学位和1946年获得地质学博士学位。
潘钟祥回国后,先后任教于中山大学,北京大学,北京地质大学,和武汉地质大学北京研究生院。潘钟祥在中山大学任教期间同时兼任两广地区地质调查所所长。
潘钟祥是中国石油学会的创建人之一和副理事长。潘钟祥在美国石油地质家协会上发表的文章“基层油藏”被认为是非常有价值的研究成果。潘钟祥还领导编订了教材《世界油气田地质学》一书。
