Pan Wen Ping 潘文炳

Pan Wen Ping, who was born in 1894 in Beijing, arrived at the University of Minnesota as the first Chinese student in 1914 with the Boxer Indemnity Scholarship. He studied at St. John’s University in Shanghai and transferred to Tsinghua College where he graduated in 1913. Shortly after his arrival, Pan encouraged his older brother Wen Huen Pan and friends Yih Kum Kwong and Ching Ling Bau to come to Minnesota as students.

Pan received his bachelor of science in chemistry in 1918, followed by another degree in metallurgical engineering in 1919. He was actively involved in various clubs and served as the first president of the Chinese Student Club, the vice-president of the Cosmopolitan Club, and in the cabinet of the Y.M.C.A. He also sang in the Glee Club as a second tenor. Aside from academic prowess, Pan was also an excellent athlete, playing on the soccer team. Pan was elected captain of the soccer team in 1915 and 1916, after the 1914 championship season. He also played on the University’s tennis team.Prior to attending the University of Minnesota, he participated in the 1913 First Far East Games in Manila and became the first Chinese athlete to win a medal.

Pan worked as an engineer for the Oliver Mining Division in Hibbing, Minnesota, for 40 years, retiring in 1959.

潘文炳, 1894年出生于中国北京一个知识分子家庭,他曾就读于上海圣约翰大学,后转入清华学堂,是清华学堂第二届(1913年癸丑级)毕业生。1914年潘文炳获得庚子赔款奖学金前往明尼苏达大学攻读化学专业,成为我校第一位中国留学生。抵达明州不久,潘文炳鼓励其兄潘文辉、好友邝翼堃和包荆令(音译)先后转学来到明尼苏达大学。

1918年,潘文炳取得化学学士学位;1919年又取得冶金工程学学位。在明大期间,他活跃于各种社团,曾担任明尼苏达大学中国学生会的第一届主席、世界学生会副主席、基督教青年会董事会成员、明尼苏达州大学合唱团里的第二男高音。除学业优异外,潘文炳还是一位非常棒的运动员。在清华学堂期间,他参加1913年在菲律宾举行的第一届远东运动会(亚运会前身),成为中国首位在亚洲运动会上取得冠军的选手。来到明尼苏达大学后,他和哥哥潘文辉、好友邝翼堃共同加入学校足球队。1914年校际联赛赛季后,潘文炳连续两年担任明尼苏达大学足球队队长;此外,他还是明尼苏达大学网球队成员。毕业后,潘文炳在明州希宾市奥利弗采矿公司担任工程师,工作40年后于1959年退休。
