Chunhua Zhao, who was born in 1963 in Qingdao, Shandong Province, came to the University of Minnesota for postdoc training in 1995, two years after earning his Ph.D in medicine from the Academy of Military Medical Sciences in Beijing.Zhao was awarded the Minnesota Bone Marrow Transplant Research Fund in 1996, as well as the Minnesota Medical Research Foundation Award and the University of Minnesota Foundation Award in 2000. He became a faculty member at the University of Minnesota in 1998, serving as an assistant professor at the Stem Cell Institute & Cancer Center. In 1999, Zhao was granted professorship by the U.S. National Key Laboratory for Experimental Hematology and served as its executive director. Zhao returned to China to continue his stem cell research in 2000. He then served as the deputy director of the State Key Laboratory of Experimental Hematology and the National Engineering Research Center for Stem Cell, and as the director of the China-US International Cooperation Laboratory.Zhao is currently the director of the Engineering Research Center and Department of Biology at the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences. He is also a Yangzi River Scholars ProgramProfessor, a winner of the National Outstanding Youth Fund, a national candidate of National New Century Talents Project, a member of National Natural Science Foundation of Life Sciences Advisory Expert Committee, and the editor of several respected science magazines.
Zhao has long been engaged in stem cell research. He has published over 80 papers in respected journals in the field. He proposed and confirmed the "sub-totipotent stem cell theory" in the international arena. He presided over the country's first stem cell research and innovative medicines to declare "primitive bone marrow mesenchyme stem cells," which gained approval to conduct clinical trials by the State Food and Drug Administration.

赵春华, 1963年生于山东青岛。在军事医学科学院获得博士学位后，他于1995年至美国明尼苏达大学从事博士后研究。次年，他获得明尼苏达骨髓移植研究基金，并于2000年获美国明尼苏达州医学研究基金奖及明尼苏达大学教授基金奖。1998年，他被授予干细胞研究所正式教职，并出任明尼苏达大学医学院血液肿瘤骨髓移植系助理教授。2000年，赵春华教授回到中国继续干细胞亚群研究。他先后担任实验血液学国家重点实验室常务副主任，国家干细胞工程技术研究中心副主任，中美国际合作实验室主任。现任中国医学科学院基础医学研究所教授、中国医学科学院组织工程研究中心主任、教育部“长江学者奖励计划”特聘教授、国家杰出青年基金获得者、国家“十五”863计划“组织器官工程”重大专项总体专家组成员、第二届国家自然科学基金委生命科学部咨询专家委员会成员、美国德克萨斯大学客座教授、美国新泽西医科与牙科大学兼任教授、国际组织工程学会教育委员会委员、国际《Journal of Laboratory & Clinical Medicine》杂志亚洲责任编辑、国际《Stem Cells and Development》杂志副主编、国际《Experimental Hematology》杂志编委。
赵春华教授长期从事干细胞研究，累计在国内外科学杂志上发表相关论文超过80篇，主编出版了专著《干细胞原理，技术宇临床》。他在国际上提出并证实了“亚全能干细胞学说”。他主持研制申报的全国第一个干细胞创新药物—“骨髓原始间充质干细胞”，已于 2004年获得国家食品药品监督管理局临床批件并进入临床试验，这也是中国第一个迈入临床试验阶段的干细胞药物治疗产品。
