Sping Lin, who was born 1918 in Zhongshan, Canton, attended Sun Yat-Sen University where he was introduced to the field of plant physiology by a professor who had studied the subject at Cornell University. Lin received a bachelor of science from Sun Yat-Sen University in 1940. In 1947, he came to the U.S. and chose the University of Minnesota under the influence of Pu Zhelong, a Ph.D. student who came to the University in 1946. Lin received a master of science in 1950 and a doctoral degree in 1952 in entomology with a minor in agricultural biochemistry from the University of Minnesota.
While at the University, Lin worked as a research fellow in entomology and economic zoology and as a research fellow in psychiatry and neurology in the Department of Agriculture. After he earned his doctorate, Lin stayed at the University and continued to work as a research fellow in psychiatry and neurology. He was promoted to assistant professor in 1963.In 1969, he was promoted to an associate professorship with Neurology Research Funds.
From 1966-1968, Lin was elected to the scientific research society Sigma Xi and received grants from the National Institutes of Health for his research work. He also received research grants from the National Institute of Neurological Diseases and Stroke and was elected to the American Society for Neuro-chemistry.
In 2000, Sping Lin and his wife Ying-Ngoh established the Sping and Ying-Ngoh T. Lin Graduate Fellowship at the University to help ensure a supply of outstanding entomologists. The fellowship was dedicated to the late Professors A.G. Richards and A.C. Hodson and has sponsored six students since 2005.

林世平,1918年出生于广东省中山市。1935年,他入读中山大学,在一位毕业于康奈尔大学的教授的引导下开始接触植物生理学。林世平1940年毕业,获得科学学士学位。1947年,林世平来到美国,并在1946年入读明大的博士生蒲蛰龙的影响下就读明尼苏达大学。1950年,林世平获得理学硕士学位,1952年获得昆虫学博士学位,并辅修农业生物化学。
在明大期间,作为研究员,林世平开展了昆虫学、经济动物学及农学院的精神病学和神经学研究。获得博士学位后,林世平在明大继续他的精神病学和神经学研究。1963年,他成为副教授;1966-1968年,他入选科学研究学会并获得国家卫生所奖金。1968-1970年,林世平获得来自国家神经疾病和中风研究院的研究资金并入选美国神经化学协会。1969年,他获得神经学研究基金的资助并成为副教授。2000年林世平及夫人创建 Sping and Ying-Ngoh T. Lin 奖学金,资助明尼苏达大学杰出的昆虫研究学者。自从2005年以来,此奖学金共资助了六名研究生。林世平还捐赠了明尼苏达大学昆虫学院的一个讲座基金和中国华南农业大学的一个讲座基金。
