How to Apply

Please review all instructions thoroughly and prepare all documents to be uploaded BEFORE starting your application. You may not save your application and come back later. If you have questions, please contact the China Center at chinactr@umn.edu or 612-624-1002.

In addition to completing this online application, you must also upload the following documents:

Essay (for study abroad programs only; research programs see below): Upload a 3-page (maximum), double-spaced essay with 1-inch margins and 12 pt. font. Essays that do not follow formatting or length requirements will not be accepted. Your essay must answer the following questions. Be as specific as possible.

  • Why did you select the program listed on your application?
  • How will your experience help you accomplish your academic, personal, and/or career goals?
  • What will you do after your experience to further the mission of building bridges of understanding and exchange between the U.S. and China?

Research plan or proposal (graduate students conducting research only): Upload a 2-page (maximum) plan or proposal that describes the research project you will be conducting with funding from the China Center. The document should be double-spaced with 1-inch margins and 12 pt. font. Proposals that do not follow formatting or length requirements will not be accepted.

Letter of recommendation:  You must obtain one letter of recommendation from a faculty member, academic adviser, or employer. Recommendation letters may be submitted directly to the China Center or uploaded here with your application.

Faculty Recommendation Letter

Upload one letter of recommendation. The letter can be from a faculty member, academic adviser, or employer. They may also send the letter directly to the China Center via email to chinactr@umn.edu or via campus mail to 160 University International Center, mail code 3021A if they work on campus.
