The Min (Amy) Xu and Michael Schumann Scholarship supports University of Minnesota students interested in China or its culture by providing financial support to help with their academic progress and to help meet the costs of obtaining a college education. This scholarship can be used for payment—partially or totally—of tuition or personal expenses. Awards are typically $500.

Eligibility

  • Applicant must be a full-time undergraduate, graduate, or professional degree student enrolled in a degree-seeking program at the University of Minnesota
  • Applicant must be in the first or second year of his or her academic program and demonstrate a strong interest in and connection with China or its culture
  • Applicant must be in good academic standing, with at least a 3.0 GPA, and show potential in their field
  • Applicants must meet at least one of the following criteria:
    • Resident of the country of China
    • Person of ethnic Chinese origin who lives in a country other than China
    • Fluent in a dialect of Chinese such as Mandarin or Cantonese 
    • Active in efforts to facilitate and promote better ties and cultural and societal understanding between China and the U.S.

History

The Min (Amy) Xu and Michael Schumann Scholarship was established in 2005 by Min (Amy) Xu and Michael Schumann, who have deep personal and professional ties to the people and the country of China. Amy was born in China and began her university studies at Fudan University prior to earning a B.S. and M.S. degrees at the University of Minnesota. Both Michael and Amy are attorneys whose professional legal careers have connections to doing business in China.
