Ph.D., Plant Pathology, 1929
Tu Chih, who was born in 1901, graduated from Tsinghua College in 1924 and received a Ph.D. in plant pathology from the University of Minnesota in 1929.
After graduation, Tu returned to China and taught at Lingnan University, Zhongshan University, Wuhan University, Henan University, and Northwest Agricultural College successively. In 1938, Tu served as the director of academic affairs at Xinjiang Agricultural College. In 1952, Xinjiang Bayi Agricultural College (later renamed as Xinjiang Agricultural University) was established and Tu served as its first president. With Tu’s proposal and efforts, the Research Institute of Agriculture, Forestry, and Husbandry was established in 1955 with Tu as its director. In 1964, the institute was expanded with into the Xinjiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences.

涂治，1901年生于湖北黄陂，1924年毕业于清华学堂。同年，他来到明尼苏达大学，并于1929年获得植物病理学专业博士学位。
毕业后，涂治回国先后任教于岭南大学、中山大学、武汉大学、河南大学、西北农学院等。1938年，涂治赴新疆担任新疆学院农科主任及教务长。1952年新疆八一农学院成立，涂治担任第一任院长。在涂治的建议和筹建下，1955年新疆成立了农林牧科研所，他兼任所长。1964年扩建为新疆农科院，涂治兼任院长。
