Wu Xiang 吴襄

Wu Xiang, who was born in Pingyang County, Zhejiang Province in 1910, graduated from Central University with a bachelor's degree in education in 1935. He then worked as a teaching assistant of physiology in the School of Medicine at Central University and was promoted to an associate professor in 1944. Sponsored by the American Bureau of Medical Aids to China and the Ministry of Education, Wu enrolled in the Department of Physiology at the University of Minnesota. One year later, Wu received his master’s degree in science and returned to China. He went back to teaching at the Central University School of Medicine and was granted professorship in 1948. Wu then served as a physiology professor at numerous universities, including Dalian University School of Medicine, Nanjing University Medical School, the PLA Second Field Army Medical College, Zunyi Medical College and Dalian Medical College. After retirement in 1987, Wu served as a member of the National Natural Science Physiology Terminology Committee, a consultant for the journal “Biological Science Development,” the Director of the China Physiology Association and an honorary chairman of the Liaoning Province Physiology Association.

Wu was the editor or author of multiple classic physiology textbooks, including the Outline of Physiology, Human Physiology and A Brief History of the Development of Modern Physiology. In 1949, he established the first Chinese people's normal scale of physiology, which remains in academic references today.

吴襄, 1910年出生于浙江省平阳县。1935年毕业于中央大学并获得教育学士学位。1936年担任中央大学医学院生理学助教并于1944年晋升为副教授。1945年,吴襄在美国医药援华会和教育部派的资助下赴美留学。同年他入读明尼苏达大学医学院生理学系,并于一年后获得科学硕士学位。随后吴襄返回了中央大学医学院并在1948年晋升为该校教授。而后,吴襄又先后于大连大学医学院,南京大学医学院,中国人民解放军第二野战军医科大学,遵义医学院,大连医学院等任教。1987年退休后,吴襄还担任全国自然科学名词审定委员会生理学名词审定委员会顾问委员,《生物科学进展》杂志顾问,中国生理学会理事和辽宁省生理学会名誉理事长。

吴襄编著了包括《生理学大纲》,《人体生理学》,和《近代生理学发展简史》在内的多部教育著作。他在1949年代所确定的中国人生理正常值,弥补了中国生理学研究在这个领域的空白,至今仍被学术界引用。
