Distinguished Chinese Alumni Award Guidelines

The China Center created the Distinguished Chinese Alumni Award to highlight and honor the outstanding accomplishments of the University's Chinese alumni. Nominations are accepted on an ongoing basis. Please review the following guidelines carefully before submitting a nomination.

Eligibility

Nominee: Nominations may include Chinese alumni and former Chinese visiting scholars. “Chinese” is understood to include individuals who are citizens in a country of the greater China area (mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Macau) and/or a person of ethnic Chinese origin.

Nominator: Nominators can be anyone who has an affiliation to the nominee and may include an alumnus or alumna of the University, a current or former member of the faculty or staff, a member of the Chinese community, or a member of the business community. Self-nominations are accepted with at least one supporting letter from an alumnus or alumna of the University, a current or former member of the faculty or staff, a member of the Chinese community, or a member of the business community. The nomination is not confidential and may be disclosed to the nominee.

Guidelines for Nominators

The selection committee will look for evidence of personal achievement; evidence of leadership qualities; and success of the individual in reaching beyond his or her professional and disciplinary boundaries. Recipients will be selected according to the impact of their work with equal weight being accorded to local, regional, or international impact. Particular consideration will be given to the geographic, disciplinary, age, and gender diversity of awardees.

Nomination Materials

The following documents should be used as guidelines in preparing a nomination. 

  • Nomination form* with biographical and contact information for both the nominee and nominator (if different). 
  • A letter from the nominator* that is no more than 2-pages, focused on the nominee’s academic and/or career accomplishments and reputation, and if appropriate, how the nominee is or has been linked in a significant way to the University of Minnesota. 
  • Nominee’s C.V. or resumé* that is no more than 5-pages and includes membership in professional societies, honors or awards, professional and public service, etc. Only the most significant publications need be enumerated. 
  • Photograph that is recent and high quality (at least 300 dpi) to be used for publicity and possible publication.
  • For self-nominees, at least one supporting letter is required. Note: Persons writing supporting letters should know that such letters would be legally available to the nominee upon request.
